Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has rejected claims by the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, that the ADC collaborated with Accord to defeat the All Progressives Congress in the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke, who contested on the platform of Accord, said there was no electoral agreement or partnership with the ADC before, during or after the election.

The governor polled 511,067 votes to defeat the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes, while the ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, garnered 17,180 votes.

Adeleke won 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured the remaining 11.

Abdullahi had, during an interview on Trust TV on Monday, said the ADC worked with Accord because it feared that a divided opposition vote could hand victory to the APC.

According to him, the party had identified the possibility that if opposition parties went into the election separately and “full throttle,” their votes could be split in a way that would favour the APC.

“We saw the possibility of collaboration. We saw the possibility earlier enough that if we decided to go full throttle, the possibility that the opposition would divide the votes and the APC would take the victory was there,” Abdullahi said.

“And that was why we saw the opportunity to work together, and that was what happened.”

Adeleke, however, dismissed the assertion in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, insisting that the ADC was never part of the coalition that mobilised support for his re-election.

He credited his victory to God, the people of Osun State and the political partners who worked for his campaign.

“I had no electoral deal or partnership with the ADC before, during, or after the governorship election,” Adeleke said.

“The credit for our victory goes to God Almighty and the good people of Osun State for their overwhelming support and re-election.

“For the sake of history, it is important to clarify that the ADC was never part of the rainbow coalition that canvassed, mobilised, and supported our campaign in the battle leading to last Saturday’s election.”

The governor also praised the political groups and individuals who, according to him, made sacrifices and worked for his re-election.

“I commend all our political partners who sacrificed, worked tirelessly, and went all out to make Saturday a victory day for all Osun people. Their commitment and support were instrumental to our success,” he said.

Adeleke added that with the election concluded, his focus would now be on governing the entire state irrespective of political affiliation, religion or ethnic background.

“Now that the election is over, I remain the Governor of all Osun people, irrespective of political affiliation, religion, or tribe. My commitment is to unite our people and continue working for the progress and prosperity of Osun State,” he stated.

The exchange has introduced a fresh disagreement over the political alliances and strategies that shaped the Osun governorship election, with the ADC leadership claiming collaboration with Accord while Adeleke has categorically denied any electoral deal with the party.
