The Office of Mr. Bashir Abdullahi Haske has issued a strongly worded statement rejecting what it describes as “false and politically motivated” allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a press release signed by the Public Relations Officer to Mr. Haske, the businessman refuted EFCC’s claims that he is evading investigation into alleged multi-million-dollar fraud under the pretext of a medical emergency.

“I am not on the run. I am committed to clearing my name and cooperating with lawful investigations. All I ask is that EFCC conducts its duties within the ambit of the rule of law and without political interference,” Haske said in the statement.

According to the release, Mr. Haske voluntarily honoured the EFCC’s invitation, appeared before investigators, and submitted documentary evidence to support the legitimacy of his financial transactions and business activities.

The statement further alleges that despite fulfilling all bail conditions, the EFCC unlawfully detained Mr. Haske, during which his health “deteriorated severely,” culminating in what was described as a near-fatal medical emergency while in custody.

“Only when confronted with the grave implications of his possible death in their custody did EFCC hurriedly release him on bail,” the statement read.

Mr. Haske is reportedly undergoing medical treatment for complications said to have arisen from the detention. The release criticised EFCC’s narrative, calling it “shocking and disingenuous” for suggesting that he is absconding, when the agency is aware of his medical condition.

The statement emphasised that Mr. Haske is a private businessman with no political ambitions or affiliations, adding that his marriage to a political figure “cannot and should not be exploited as a pretext for persecution.”

It also condemned what it called EFCC’s attempt to enlist Interpol in a matter that, according to the release, falls outside the agency’s mandate, citing Interpol’s own prohibition against involvement in politically motivated cases.

Mr. Haske reiterated his willingness to cooperate with lawful investigations conducted “without intimidation, harassment, and political manipulation,” and urged the EFCC to return to its statutory mandate of fighting genuine financial crimes.
