Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, has dissociated himself from a publication that identified him as President of the Nigerian Law Society and attributed to him a joint statement concerning the conferment of the Senior Counsel of Nigeria, otherwise known as the “Blue Silk” rank.

In a public disclaimer dated July 11, 2026, Ikwuazom said the report, published by TheCable on its website and circulated on its social media platforms, was entirely false insofar as it related to him.

The disputed report concerned a statement purportedly issued jointly by the Nigerian Law Society and the Body of Senior Counsel of Nigeria, asserting that both organisations possessed the autonomy to confer the Blue Silk rank on eligible lawyers.

Ikwuazom said he was wrongly described as President of the NLS and represented as a signatory to the statement.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I am not the President of NLS; I am not a member of NLS; I have never authorised, signed or issued the statement attributed to me in the publication,” he stated.

The senior lawyer further clarified that he had no involvement in the activities, decisions or public positions of either the NLS or BOSCON relating to the conferment of the Blue Silk rank.

“I unequivocally dissociate myself from the publication and every statement attributed to me therein,” he said.

Ikwuazom urged members of the legal profession, his clients, professional colleagues and the general public to disregard the report in its entirety as it related to him.

He disclosed that he had taken steps to require TheCable to immediately retract the publication, publish an apology and issue a correction with the same prominence and circulation given to the original report.

The publication had reported that the NLS and BOSCON maintained that the application, assessment and conferment of the Blue Silk rank were governed exclusively by their internal rules and could not be controlled by the NBA, the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee or any government institution.

The organisations reportedly argued that the rank was intended to recognise excellence among lawyers engaged in non-contentious practice areas and complemented, rather than competed with, the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The report also cited their claim that a Federal High Court judgment delivered on January 27, 2026, affirmed that the Blue Silk initiative was not created under the Legal Practitioners Act and was therefore outside the regulatory authority of bodies established under the Act.

The LPPC had previously warned lawyers against adopting or presenting themselves under the Blue Silk designation, maintaining that the SAN rank remained the only professional rank statutorily recognised for legal practitioners in Nigeria.

TheCable subsequently added an editor’s note correcting the report and clarifying that the NLS and BOSCON statement was signed by Dahiru Aliyu, President of the NLS, and not Ikwuazom.
