The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Dr Tanko Mohammad, has applauded women judges in the country for exhibiting high standards in the discharge of their judicial functions despite enormous challenges in the justice sector.
Justice Mohammad made the commendation in Abuja, Thursday, at the Biennial conference of the National Association of Women Judges of Nigeria.

The CJN stated that going by the trend, female judges will soon take over the judiciary in Lagos like in some other states.

Represented by Justice Olabode Rhodes Vivour of the Supreme Court, the CJN urged women judges to continue to make giant strides in the discharge of their adjudicatory duties.

He said he was not surprised with the performance of female judges because they have exhibited sound legal expertise that cannot be doubted.

“I am happy that women judges in every state in Nigeria have been doing wonderfully well, they have some expertise that cannot be doubted and I want to say that very soon, they will take over the judiciary in Lagos”.

Meanwhile, the CJN congratulated the outgoing President of the association, Justice Mary Peter Odili of the Supreme court for her tremendous contributions to the association and challenged those that will take over leadership of NAWJN to keep up the good work.

In her address, Justice Odili lamented that women are still being marginalized and discriminated against in the country.

As a developing nation, she said the place and the role of women are still being confused and largely misunderstood.

She noted the challenges faced by women in the work environment in Nigeria particularly judges is worthy of consideration in such National conference.

“As we look forward to the government for the 35% affirmative action, the need to have women to prepare themselves to take up the opportunities on arrival is imperative and it is a task which we must champion and pursue with vigour.”

She, therefore, commended women judges for their support to her leadership and urged them to give some support to the team taking over from her to enable them to attain the said objectives.
