The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe (SAN), has called on legal practitioners to prioritise their mental health, emphasising its significance in the demanding nature of their profession.

Speaking in commemoration of World Mental Health Day, held recently, Osigwe, stressed the unique pressures faced by those in the legal field and urged them to address mental health challenges head-on.

“It is both a privilege and a responsibility to address you on this World Mental Health Day and underscore the vital role mental health plays in our lives, especially as legal professionals,” Osigwe said.

“We stand as pillars of societal stability, offering hope and support to those who seek our guidance. For us, the significance of mental health is perhaps unparalleled among all professions,” he said.

Citing global statistics, Osigwe pointed out that hundreds of millions of people experienced mental health challenges annually, with one in three women and one in five men expected to face major depression at some point in their lives.

He expressed concerns over the lack of attention mental health received, stating, “Despite its profound importance, mental health remains a subject often neglected and shrouded in silence.”

Osigwe encouraged legal professionals to take proactive steps towards their mental well-being, noting that it had a direct influence in their overall health and quality of life.

“Mental health impacts each of us, both directly and indirectly, and now is the time to shine a light on this crucial aspect of our existence,” Osigwe added.

The NBA President also revealed plans for an upcoming webinar to foster dialogue and break the stigma surrounding mental health within the legal community.

“To facilitate this vital conversation, we will be hosting an enlightening webinar in the coming days, featuring a mental health professional who will impart valuable insights.

“I encourage each of you to join us as we delve into this topic through a series of discussions aimed at emphasising the importance of mental health, breaking the associated stigma, and fostering a vision for a brighter future.”

Osigwe concluded by reminding his colleagues of the age-old adage, “health is wealth,” stressing the need for self-care and mental wellness amidst the challenges of legal practice.
