Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, has responded to criticisms that trailed the graduation of Temilorun Olanipekun, son of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Olanipekun.

Temilorun, who graduated from Oxford University, was pictured with his parents on Thursday, causing many to ask if the EKSU VC did not believe in the quality of education in Nigeria to send his son abroad.

However, in a statement signed by the EKSU’s Head, Directorate of Information & Corporate Affairs, Bode Bode Olofinmuagun, the school clarified that Temilorun benefitted from a scholarship opportunity to study abroad.

Olofinmuagun also stated that the graduand was a First Class graduate of a Nigerian university before taking up the scholarship opportunity at Oxford.

The statement read in part, “It is, however, apposite to make it abundantly clear that the Vice-Chancellor strongly believes in the Nigerian project, in general, and EKSU, in particular. As a Comrade, he does not believe in either medical or educational tourism, common among some privileged few.

“The graduand had his first degree from a Nigerian university and graduated with a First Class Honours. Consequently, he won a FULLY SPONSORED (highly competitive) scholarship to embark on his Master’s degree programme at Oxford University. The scholarship incorporated accommodation, tuition, feeding and other expenses.”

The statement added that the VC, Prof Olanipekun, was not aware of his son’s admission to study at Oxford University and could not have stopped him from attending such a globally acclaimed institution.

“Indeed, there was no way his father could have discouraged him from studying at the prestigious Oxford University. As a matter of fact, the graduand only informed his father after receiving the letter conveying the scholarship award,” the statement added.
