The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised concerns over possible foul play in the results of Chinedu Okeke, who was initially celebrated as the best candidate in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with a score of 375.

Speaking at the 2025 JAMB Policy Meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed that Okeke, an applicant for Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos, is already a matriculated student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he is studying Medicine.

“We wrote to the University of Nigeria to verify his status, and they confirmed that he is indeed a student of the institution and doing well academically,” Oloyede said.

The discovery triggered suspicion within the examination body over Okeke’s eligibility to participate in the UTME. By law, a student cannot matriculate twice, raising the possibility that the candidate may have sat for the exam under false pretenses.

In a follow-up interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), JAMB’s Public Communications Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, confirmed that the board suspects that Okeke may have acted as a mercenary to write the exam for someone else.

“There are discrepancies in his registration information,” Benjamin stated. “One record indicates he’s from the South-East, while another shows Lagos State. This raises red flags about his true identity and intent.”

He added, “As an undergraduate who has already been exposed to tertiary education, he possesses an unfair advantage over other candidates. This undermines the integrity of the examination process.”

JAMB has launched a full investigation into the case and may take further action pending its findings.

Meanwhile, the board announced other top scorers in the 2025 UTME, including:

  • John Ayuba from Gombe State – 374
  • Olayinka Jimoh from Kwara State – 373
  • Ayibo Roberts from Rivers State – 373
  • Chibueze Omonugbo from Enugu State – 373
  • Tunmise Olawepo from Kwara State – 373
  • Leslie Afinotan from Delta State – 373
  • Chukwuemeka Azoyenime from Delta State – 372
  • Emmanuel Oyebode from Ogun State – 372
  • Cecil Omigie from Edo State – 372

JAMB says it remains committed to upholding the credibility and transparency of the UTME and the broader admission process.
