*Urge Police Not To Sweep Case Under Carpet

Students of the Faculty of Law, University of Port Harcourt, have staged a peaceful “Justice Walk” to demand a thorough and transparent investigation into the alleged murder of a 500-level Law student, Habibatu Favour Aruwa, in Warri, Delta State.

Aruwa, 21, who was said to be in her final year and only about two months away from graduation, was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend, Adedamola Michael Oyewole, 31, at his residence along Ayidi Street in the Edgeba area of Warri.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying he is currently in custody while investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Yemi Oyeniyi, said the command received a distress call on June 24, 2026, from a landlord who reported that his tenant had allegedly murdered his girlfriend in a self-contained apartment.

According to the police, operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene, where the victim was found in a pool of blood. She was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.

The police said preliminary investigation revealed that an argument broke out between the suspect and the deceased after she allegedly discovered that he was married to a woman based in the United States.

The commissioner said the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim in the neck, stomach and thighs during the argument, leading to her death.

“The suspect is in custody while investigation is ongoing,” the police said.

Residents of the area said the deceased had travelled from Choba, Rivers State, to visit the suspect in Warri and was seen in the neighbourhood on the day of the incident.

Some neighbours claimed the two were known to be in a relationship and were often seen together in the suspect’s Lexus SUV.

It was gathered that the landlord reportedly heard the victim screaming for help and immediately alerted community youths and the police. He was also said to have blocked the suspect’s vehicle to prevent him from leaving the premises before help arrived.

When the landlord and the youths demanded access to the apartment, the victim was allegedly found lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

Following the incident, UNIPORT law students organised the Justice Walk to mourn Aruwa and call on the Delta State Police Command and the Attorney General of Delta State to ensure that the matter is not swept under the carpet.

During the procession, one of the student representatives said the protest was not merely a gathering of law students, but a collective expression of grief over the painful loss of one of their own.

The student said that beyond the headlines, rumours and narratives being pushed on social media was a young woman with a life, identity and future.

“Today, we gather not just as law students, but as people grieving the painful loss of one of our own,” the student said.

“She was a law student, a final-year law student with just two months to graduate. She was someone’s daughter. She was someone’s coursemate. She was someone’s friend. And she had dreams and ambitions she was chasing.”

The students condemned what they described as attempts to malign the deceased after her death, insisting that no woman deserved to have her character assassinated after being killed.

“Abibatu was not a hookup girl. She was a 500-level law student with just two months to graduate,” the student said.

“No woman deserves to have her character assassinated upon death after having her life taken away from her. We are law students and we believe strongly in fairness and justice.”

They called on the Delta State Police Command to carry out a swift and transparent investigation and urged the Attorney General of Delta State to ensure that justice is served.

“Delta State Police Command, we believe in your expertise. We charge you to investigate this matter swiftly and do not allow it to be swept under the carpet. Please do justice to this matter and let justice be done,” the students said.

The procession ended with repeated chants of “Justice for Abiba!”

The management of the University of Port Harcourt, through its spokesperson, Dr. Sam Kpenu, expressed deep sorrow over the death of the student.

The university said it was engaging with security agencies to ensure that justice is served and that the circumstances surrounding the killing are fully investigated.

Aruwa’s death has triggered outrage among students, colleagues and members of the public, who are demanding diligent investigation and prosecution of all persons found culpable.
