Pandemonium broke out at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State on Tuesday as traders clashed with security operatives enforcing the state government’s closure of the commercial hub.

The market was shut on Monday on the directive of Governor Chukwuma Soludo over traders’ continued compliance with the Monday sit-at-home order associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Governor Soludo had questioned why traders continued to keep their shops closed despite what he described as prevailing peace and calm across the state.

Security operatives, including heavily armed police officers and armoured vehicles, were deployed early Tuesday to enforce the closure.

However, tension escalated later in the day when traders stormed the market, attempting to access their shops in defiance of the shutdown order.

The move led to a confrontation with security personnel, resulting in chaos within the market area.

In videos circulating on social media, traders were seen running for safety as gunshots rang out, sparking panic and disorder across the market premises.

There was no immediate official statement on casualties or arrests as of the time of filing this report.
