Two Supreme Court justices in Tehran were killed on Saturday, and a third was wounded in an armed attack outside the Supreme Court building. State media reported that the assailant, identified as a staff member responsible for refreshments at the court, used a handgun to target the judges before taking his own life.

The deceased judges have been identified as Judge Mohammad Moghiseh, head of Branch 53 of the Supreme Court, and Hojatoleslam Ali Razini, head of Branch 39. Both were renowned for their work on cases involving national security, espionage, and terrorism. The third judge, whose identity has not been disclosed, is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the attack.
In the aftermath of the attack, the Judiciary Media Centre released a statement condemning the act as a premeditated assassination. It described the victims as “dedicated and revolutionary judges steadfast in their defence of public security.” The statement also clarified that preliminary investigations revealed the assailant was neither a litigant in any Supreme Court case nor a visitor to any of its branches.
The Judiciary emphasized the significance of the attack, noting the judges’ critical role in combating threats to national security. “These were brave and experienced judges renowned for their fight against crimes against national security, espionage, and terrorism,” the statement read.
According to IRGC-affiliated Fars News, the assailant was a court employee responsible for refreshments. Details of his motivations remain unclear, but authorities are treating the case as a high-profile security matter.
Hojatoleslam Ali Razini, one of the victims, survived a previous assassination attempt in January 1999. ISNA News noted that this attack comes amid heightened tensions, with the Judiciary recently intensifying efforts to prosecute individuals linked to espionage and other security threats.
Authorities swiftly responded to the attack, but the gunman committed suicide before he could be apprehended. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and motivations behind the incident.
