A coalition of lawyers, civil society organizations, political parties, and ethnic leaders has united under the banner of Joint Action for Democracy (JAD) to demand the immediate removal of Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and Justices Peter Lifu and James Omotosho. The groups allege that these judges have compromised the integrity of the judiciary through questionable ex parte judgments favoring supporters of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

In a press conference, the National Coordinator of JAD, High Chief Peter Ameh, expressed deep concern over the apparent silence of relevant authorities regarding the situation. He accused Justice Tsoho of employing special judges to deliver controversial rulings that benefit pro-Wike factions, raising serious doubts about judicial impartiality and adherence to legal standards.

The coalition is calling for Justice Tsoho and Justice Lifu to be barred from assigning or presiding over any matters related to Rivers State until their questionable judgments and ex parte orders for pro-Wike groups are thoroughly investigated. They argue that this step is necessary to safeguard the image and integrity of the judiciary.

In response to these developments, ethnic youth leaders, lawyers, and former presidential candidates plan to march to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and foreign missions. Their objective is not only to demand the removal of the accused judges but also to advocate for a visa ban against them due to their alleged involvement in issuing judgments that undermine public trust in the judiciary.

The coalition drew parallels to the controversial decision of Justice Bassey Ikpeme in 1993, which led to the nullification of the presidential election and the truncation of democracy in Nigeria. They firmly believe that it is crucial to halt further assignments or hearings by the accused judges until a thorough investigation is conducted.

Furthermore, the coalition is urging lawyers across various sectors to boycott courts presided over by Justice Tsoho and Justice Lifu. They argue that the continuous issuance of dubious ex parte rulings that contravene established judicial precedents and constitutional provisions cannot be tolerated, and the legal community must unite against practices that threaten the rule of law and judicial independence.

The coalition’s press statement serves as a call for accountability within the judicial system and urges all stakeholders in Nigeria’s democracy to join hands in the fight for justice and integrity within the courts. They also criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC for remaining silent on the issue, warning that if the rot continues, it will eventually turn into a dragon that will affect everyone.

The allegations against the Federal High Court judges have sparked widespread concern among legal professionals, civil society groups, and the general public. The outcome of the proposed investigation and the response from the judiciary and government authorities are eagerly awaited as the nation grapples with this challenge to the integrity of its judicial system.
