The Minister of Transportation, Said Ahmed Alkali, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue his governorship ambition in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His resignation was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Umar Alkali Jibril, who said the move followed a directive by President Tinubu mandating all political appointees seeking elective offices to step down in line with extant rules.
According to the statement, Alkali formally tendered his resignation letter to the President, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the cabinet and noting that significant progress had been recorded in the transportation sector under his watch.
“The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali has officially tendered his resignation to the Presidency. This move follows the presidential directive requiring all political appointees seeking elective offices to step down from their current roles,” the statement read.
Jibril further stated that Alkali is resigning to enable him focus on his planned bid for the Gombe State governorship seat in the forthcoming elections.
He added that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and commended the former minister for his service to the nation.
“The President has accepted the resignation and thanked the Minister for his dedicated service to the nation,” the statement added.
Alkali is expected to formally declare his governorship ambition in the coming days, a development that is already generating political interest in Gombe State as realignments begin ahead of the 2027 elections.
The directive compelling appointees with political ambitions to resign is consistent with efforts to ensure compliance with electoral laws and uphold neutrality in public office, and follows similar precedents in previous administrations.
