The Chief Judge of Gombe State, Justice Akila Hemen, has released 38 inmates awaiting trial in the Gombe Prisons during a jail delivery on Thursday, as part of events leading to his retirement.

The inmates included the aged, those with health challenges and those who had stayed for a long time in custody.

Justice Hemen, who was in company with other members of the criminal justice committee, urged the freed inmates to be productive members of the society and avoid any act that would bring them back to the prison as inmates.

Earlier in his address, the state Comptroller of Prisons, Ahmadu Adamu, described the Gombe Prisons as a facility that was keeping inmates thrice the number of its capacity, thereby posing great danger in terms of health and security.

“This is bound to make the actualisation and implementation of the reformatory programmes very difficult,” he said.

Adamu also appealed to stakeholders such as the police, Ministry of Justice and the courts to improve on their service delivery to ensure speedy trials and respect for inmates’ rights.
