The Body of Benchers, under the leadership of Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, has recently reconstituted its committees, injecting new life into them for maximum efficiency and delivery of their mandate. The move is aimed at ensuring that the committees are well-equipped to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The committees have been carefully constituted, with members chosen based on their expertise and experience in their respective fields. The committees include Infrastructure Development Management and Security Committee, Finance Budget and Investment Committee, Publication Information Technology Committee, Elders Committee, Screening Committee, Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, Human Resources Management Committee, Benchers Appointment Committee, Ethics Compliance and Disciplinary Committee, Special Duties/Historical and Archives Committee, Mentoring Committee, Rules and Regulation Committee, Judiciary Advisory Committee, and Welfare Events and Benchers Programmes Committee.
In addition to the standing committees, two ad hoc committees have also been constituted, namely the Committee on Review of Salaries and Condition of Service for Judicial officers, Serving and Retired, and the Constitutional and Statute Reform Committee.
The Infrastructure Development Management and Security Committee, chaired by Mr. RA Lawal-Rabana, SAN, is tasked with overseeing the development and management of the Body of Benchers’ infrastructure, as well as ensuring the security of its facilities. The Finance Budget and Investment Committee, headed by Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, SAN, is responsible for managing the Body’s finances, budgeting, and investments.
The Publication Information Technology Committee, chaired by Hon. Justice H. M. Ogunwumiju, JSC, is responsible for overseeing the Body’s publications and information technology infrastructure. The Elders Committee, headed by Mrs. H.A Balogun, comprises all past chairmen of the Body of Benchers and is tasked with providing guidance and advice to the Body.
The Screening Committee, chaired by Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON, (CJN), is responsible for screening candidates for admission into the legal profession, while the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, headed by Hon. Justice. Dr. Ishaq Bello OFR (rtd), is tasked with disciplining erring legal practitioners.
The Human Resources Management Committee, chaired by Hon. Justice Umaru Eri (rtd), is responsible for managing the Body’s human resources, including appointments, promotions, and discipline. The Benchers Appointment Committee, headed by Prof. Yusuf O. Ali, SAN, is tasked with appointing new Benchers.
The Ethics Compliance and Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Mrs. Funke Adekoya, SAN, is responsible for ensuring that legal practitioners comply with the ethical standards of the profession and disciplining those who violate them. The Special Duties/Historical and Archives Committee, headed by Mrs. H.A Turaki, is tasked with handling special duties and maintaining the Body’s historical records and archives.
The Mentoring Committee, chaired by Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, OFR, SAN, is responsible for mentoring young legal practitioners, while the Rules and Regulation Committee, headed by Hon. Justice John Inyang Okoro, JSC, is tasked with reviewing and updating the Body’s rules and regulations.
The Judiciary Advisory Committee, chaired by Hon. Justice Mahmud Mohammed, GCON, is responsible for advising the Body on matters relating to the judiciary, while the Welfare Events and Benchers Programmes Committee, headed by Hon. Justice Uzo Anyanwu, JCA (rtd), is tasked with organizing events and programs for the welfare of Benchers.
The Committee on Review of Salaries and Condition of Service for Judicial officers, Serving and Retired, chaired by Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN, is responsible for reviewing the salaries and conditions of service for judicial officers, while the Constitutional and Statute Reform Committee, headed by Hon. Justice B.B Kanyip, OFR, is tasked with reviewing and reforming the constitution and statutes relating to the legal profession.
