Hon. Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has revealed that he was offered a N5 billion bribe to support the impeachment process of his principal when he served as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

In an interview with Channels TV, Ehie disclosed that in October, he was approached with the bribe offer by unnamed individuals seeking his support for the impeachment of Governor Fubara. However, Ehie stated that he turned down the bribe after realizing its true purpose. He emphasized that Governor Fubara is a man of peace and has always chosen the path of conflict resolution in handling the state’s political crises.

“The governor is a man of peace. The governor decided to follow the way of conflict resolution. In October, I was approached with a N5 billion bribe against the governor, but I refused. The bribe was for impeachment, but I turned it down,” Ehie said.

Ehie also addressed accusations from the former Head of Service, George Nwaeke, regarding the bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Nwaeke had implicated Ehie in the arson incident, but Ehie vehemently denied any involvement. He accused Nwaeke of being financially compromised and claimed that the former Head of Service was coerced into making the false allegations.

“I have no hand in, nor any information about, the burning of the House of Assembly. We just woke up and heard that the Assembly had been bombed. We had finished screening commissioners and left the complex. We didn’t adjourn to 30 October 2023; we finished sitting on 29th October, which was a Sunday,” Ehie clarified.

He further explained that security operatives had indicated that the Speaker’s convoy was seen leaving the Assembly after hours, and since only the Speaker had access to the complex past 6pm, he was the one with the ability to enter.

Addressing Nwaeke’s actions following his resignation from his position as Head of Service on March 24, 2025, Ehie stated that Nwaeke had requested financial assistance from the governor shortly after tendering his resignation, citing personal financial struggles.

“George Nwaeke resigned on March 24, 2025, and by March 25, 2025, he was already asking the governor for money, claiming he needed help for a better house and other personal needs,” Ehie revealed. He described Nwaeke as someone who was not content and sought money despite his resignation.

On the allegations surrounding the incomplete reconstruction of the Assembly complex, Ehie refuted claims that the governor refused to rebuild it. He clarified that the construction project was nearly completed, with 80% of the work done, and the contractor had been fully paid. He also stated that an administrator had recently visited the complex and confirmed its progress.

“The job is 80% completed, and the contractor has been fully paid. The administrator on a visit to the complex confirmed that it’s almost completed,” Ehie added.

Ehie concluded by reiterating that Governor Fubara is a man of peace and committed to resolving conflicts in the state. He emphasized that the accusations against him and the governor were politically motivated and based on falsehoods.
