Balthazar Engonga Ebang, who gained notoriety in late 2024 after his private videos went viral on social media, is now standing trial for alleged financial misconduct in his management of a state-owned company.

The man who became an internet sensation for all the wrong reasons late last year is now facing serious criminal charges that could land him in prison for nearly two decades.

Balthazar Engonga Ebang, whose private intimate videos caused a social media storm in 2024, began facing justice this week for alleged financial crimes during his tenure managing a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Finance.

The trial, which commenced on Monday, is scheduled to last three days and involves several other officials from the public enterprise alongside Engonga Ebang as co-defendants.

Prosecutors have painted a picture of systematic financial misconduct, requesting the court impose the maximum penalties available under the law.

The prosecution has made a comprehensive sentencing request totaling 18 years in prison, along with substantial financial penalties:

Prison Sentences Requested:

  • 8 years for embezzlement charges
  • 4 years and 5 months for illicit enrichment
  • 6 years and 1 day for abuse of power

Additional Penalties:

  • Fine of 910 million CFA francs (approximately $1.5 million USD)
  • Permanent ban from holding any public office during his sentence period

The massive fine represents one of the largest financial penalties sought in recent corporate fraud cases in the CEMAC region, where the CFA franc serves as the common currency.

The criminal charges relate to Engonga Ebang’s role in managing a state-owned company that falls under the Ministry of Finance’s oversight.

While specific details of the alleged misconduct have not been fully disclosed, the multiple charges suggest a pattern of financial irregularities including:

  • Misappropriation of public funds (embezzlement)
  • Accumulation of wealth through illegal means (illicit enrichment)
  • Misuse of official position for personal gain (abuse of power)

Engonga Ebang’s legal team has mounted a strong defense, categorically rejecting all charges brought against their client and the other co-defendants.

The defense strategy appears to focus on challenging both the evidence presented and the legal basis for the prosecution’s case.

The trial represents a dramatic fall from grace for Engonga Ebang, whose name became synonymous with scandal after his private intimate videos circulated widely on social media platforms in late 2024.

The viral incident, which caused significant public embarrassment and social media commentary, has now been overshadowed by these serious criminal allegations that could result in substantial prison time.
