Former OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with the fatal stabbing of her Nigerian partner, Christian Obumseli, inside their Miami condominium in 2022.

Clenney, 30, appeared before a Miami-Dade court on Monday and entered the guilty plea under an agreement that brought the second-degree murder case against her to an end.

She pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, with credit for the time she has already spent in custody since her arrest in August 2022.

The court also imposed five years of probation following her release from prison. She is also expected to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with treatment requirements during the probationary period.

Clenney had originally been charged with second-degree murder over the death of 27-year-old Obumseli, who suffered a fatal stab wound during an altercation at the couple’s apartment in Miami’s Edgewater neighbourhood on April 3, 2022.

The case had been heading for trial before the parties reached a plea agreement.

Clenney had acknowledged causing the stab wound but maintained through her lawyers that she acted in self-defence during a violent confrontation with Obumseli.

Prosecutors disputed that account and maintained that Obumseli was unarmed when he was stabbed.

The prosecution had also relied on videos and other evidence relating to the couple’s troubled relationship, including footage showing Clenney physically confronting Obumseli on previous occasions.

Her defence team, on the other hand, had maintained that Clenney was a victim of domestic abuse, an allegation rejected by Obumseli’s family.

During Monday’s proceedings, a relative read an emotional victim-impact statement on behalf of Obumseli’s mother, describing the lasting effect of her son’s death on the family.

“Nothing can describe what it feels like for a mother to stand at the grave of her child. There are some things that will never happen to me now that he is gone. The birthdays and holidays we will not celebrate with him, the conversations we will never have, the person he will grow into — those losses will go well beyond today’s court case,” the statement read.

Clenney did not address the court before the sentence was imposed.

Miami-Dade prosecutors said the agreement was reached after consultations with Obumseli’s family and represented Clenney’s formal acceptance of criminal responsibility for his death.

Clenney had remained in custody since she was arrested in Hawaii on August 10, 2022, about four months after Obumseli’s death. Her time already served will count towards the six-year prison sentence.

The guilty plea ends more than four years of criminal proceedings arising from the killing, which attracted widespread attention in the United States and Nigeria because of Clenney’s social-media profile and Obumseli’s Nigerian background.
