Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, his office confirmed in a statement released on Sunday.

The 82-year-old former president was evaluated last week after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. Further tests revealed a concerning prostate nodule, leading to a diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer on Friday. The cancer, classified as a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), is considered high-grade and fast-growing.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement noted. Biden and his family are currently consulting with his medical team to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

The Gleason scoring system is used to assess the severity of prostate cancer based on how abnormal the cancer cells appear under a microscope. A score of 9, the highest on the scale, indicates a poorly differentiated cancer with a high likelihood of spreading.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, second only to skin cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 13 out of every 100 men will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives, with risk increasing significantly with age.

Biden, who left office in January as the oldest president in U.S. history, has faced a number of health challenges in recent years. In 2023, a cancerous skin lesion was removed from his chest during a routine physical examination. His family has also been touched deeply by cancer: his son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. The former president has often linked Beau’s illness to his military service in Iraq and exposure to toxic burn pits.

In the aftermath of Beau’s death, Biden became a passionate advocate for cancer research. As vice president under President Barack Obama, he spearheaded the 2016 “Cancer Moonshot” initiative, a $1.8 billion federal effort aimed at accelerating cancer research. He relaunched the initiative in 2022 during his presidency, with the ambitious goal of “ending cancer as we know it.”
