The Nigerian legal community was thrown into mourning on Tuesday morning following the death of Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), former Chief Justice of Nigeria, who passed away at a hospital in Saudi Arabia after a prolonged illness. He was 71.

A family source confirmed the death, describing it as a profound loss to both the family and the nation.

Justice Muhammad was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and presided over the Supreme Court during some of the country’s most politically sensitive periods.

His tenure was cut short in 2022 due to deteriorating health, forcing him into retirement—a decision those close to him said was particularly difficult for a man deeply devoted to the law and public service.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalised, but family sources said his remains would be returned to Nigeria for burial in accordance with Islamic rites in his home state of Bauchi.

To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.
