The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele into custody shortly after his release from Department of State Services (DSS) detention on Thursday night.

According to sources, Emefiele was picked up by EFCC operatives less than an hour after the DSS freed him and is currently being interrogated at the anti-graft agency’s Abuja headquarters.

The EFCC is reportedly investigating Emefiele for alleged financial impropriety and misappropriation of funds during his tenure as CBN governor.

Emefiele had been in DSS custody since June when he was suspended by President Bola Tinubu from office before officially resigning in September.

The former CBN governor was previously arraigned by the Federal Government on charges related to illegal firearms possession and conspiracy to commit fraud, which were eventually withdrawn.

However, fresh charges are expected to be filed against Emefiele by the EFCC as he remains detained by the agency.

An EFCC spokesperson could not officially confirm Emefiele’s arrest when contacted by our correspondent. But sources stated he may be facing new charges from the anti-graft body.

Emefiele’s tenure at the CBN was mired in controversy before his eventual removal. His arrest by the EFCC signals further scrutiny into his activities while helming the apex bank.
