The Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lafia Branch, has successfully secured the release of two indigent inmates, Kasim Babao and Yahaya Ibrahim, who had been in custody since February 27, 2025, without trial.

The duo were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court in Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nassarawa State on allegations of theft and pleaded not guilty during their initial court appearance. Despite their plea, they remained in custody for over five months until the intervention of the NBA committee.

Following their release, Kasim and Yahaya expressed profound gratitude to the NBA Human Rights Committee, Lafia, for its commitment and diligence in pursuing justice on their behalf.

Chairman of the committee, Mohammed Danjuma,Esq while addressing the inmates at the time of their release, admonished them to remain law-abiding and to avoid actions that could lead to further conflict with the law.

The committee’s intervention is part of an ongoing effort to provide pro bono legal services to underserved individuals in the state. Last month, the Nigeria Correctional Service, Doma Road, Lafia, submitted a list of 22 indigent inmates in urgent need of legal representation to the committee.

The NBA Lafia Human Rights Committee has pledged to continue working to ensure that the rights of vulnerable individuals are upheld and that justice is not denied due to lack of legal representation.
