The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, has disclosed that five soldiers allegedly involved in the invasion of students’ hostels in Osogbo have been arrested by military authorities.

Adebooye made the disclosure while addressing protesting students on campus, following outrage over the alleged attack on off-campus hostels by soldiers from the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the military high command had reached out to the university and visited the campus after receiving complaints over the incident.

“The military top echelon has reached out to us. They actually came to campus this morning. Five of the soldiers have been arrested. Five of them have been apprehended,” he said.

Adebooye condemned the incident, alleging that the soldiers assaulted students, stole their belongings and destroyed hostel property during the operation.

He alleged that some students were raped, while mobile phones, power banks and money were taken away from students. He also said several hostel doors and windows were damaged during the invasion.

“They raped our students. They collected phones from students, removed the SIM cards and took away the phones. They took away power banks. They took away money from students. They broke the doors and windows of hostels,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Describing the incident as unacceptable, Adebooye said the actions allegedly carried out by the soldiers amounted to a betrayal of the trust placed in security personnel.

“The people we have recruited to protect us have turned around to become our enemy. The people we are supposed to call upon when we are under security threat have themselves become security threats against us. This is not acceptable in any nation,” he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor said he personally visited about 12 or 13 affected hostels and was moved by the level of destruction and trauma suffered by the students.

“I visited about 12 or 13 hostels, and I wept while discussing the incident with the military commander. This should not happen in the same society,” he added.

Adebooye appealed to the military authorities to restrict newly graduated recruits to their barracks and keep them away from the university environment.

He assured students that the institution would only seek military assistance through the appropriate command when necessary.

The Vice-Chancellor also acknowledged the emotional and psychological impact of the incident on students, assuring them that the university and the Osun State Government would continue to pursue justice.

Meanwhile, a female student of the university has alleged that one of the soldiers who invaded the off-campus hostels attempted to sexually assault her after forcing his way into her room during Monday night’s attack.

The student, identified simply as Ademola, recounted the incident in a video shared by Osun Defender, saying she was alone in her room preparing a meal when soldiers stormed the residence.

According to her, the soldiers had earlier moved through the area before returning later in the evening, knocking on doors and searching rooms.

“My name is Ademola, a student of Osun State University. I was in my hostel room cooking when I noticed they were around. After a while, everything died down. However, later, we started hearing noise again,” she said.

She said the soldiers directed their flashlights into her room and demanded that she open the door.

“One of them asked how many of us were inside the room and I told him two. I also told him my roommate wasn’t around,” she said.

Ademola alleged that the situation became violent after one of the soldiers entered her room.

“He pinned me to my bathroom door, told me I would like it. He also told me not to shout. So, I begged him,” she alleged.

She said she managed to free herself and moved towards the door, asking the soldier to leave.

“I had to look for a way to get out of his hold and moved to the door. On moving to the door, I told him to move out,” she said.

She further alleged that another soldier entered the room and attempted to calm her while encouraging his colleague.

“His colleague came in and also told me to calm down, that I would love it and that I shouldn’t shout,” she alleged.

The student said she raised the alarm by screaming, forcing both soldiers to leave the room.

“When they started moving, I shouted and screamed. After shouting, they both moved out and I had to use force to close the door,” she said.

She added that another student later came to check on her after hearing the commotion.

The alleged attempted sexual assault followed Monday’s invasion of students’ hostels, during which several students were reportedly beaten and more than 60 mobile phones and other electronic devices allegedly taken away.

Witnesses also claimed that some female students were stripped and forced to dance naked during the incident.

Following the allegations, the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo announced on Tuesday that it had launched an investigation after receiving a petition from the Southwest Zone D of the National Association of Nigerian Students.

The Army said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and assured the public that any personnel found culpable would face disciplinary and legal action.

The development has heightened tension within the university community, with students demanding accountability, justice for victims and stronger protection against future attacks.
