First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Sunday commissioned the National Assembly Christian Chapel, declaring that while lawmakers legislate for the people, they ultimately remain accountable to God.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony held within the National Assembly complex in Abuja, the First Lady described the chapel as a spiritual reminder of the higher moral responsibility placed on those entrusted with the task of lawmaking.

“As we dedicate this Chapel today, may it inspire humility in leadership, courage in decision-making and compassion in service. And may Nigeria continue to flourish as we collectively seek the face of God in worship and prayers in this Chapel in Jesus Name,” she said.

She added, “I believe the National Assembly is ready to pray Nigeria into greatness.”

The event drew prominent dignitaries, including former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, as well as members of the National Assembly, both serving and former, Christians and non-Christians alike.

In his remarks, General Gowon urged legislators to ensure that all their actions are guided by the best interest of the country.

He emphasised that the law of God is rooted in love; love for God and love for neighbour, and called on lawmakers to imbibe that spirit in their legislative duties.

“Love must be used to ensure the unity and continuity of this nation. God loves us all and we must love one another”, Gowon said.

Former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, who initiated the chapel project during the 8th Assembly, described the facility as a call to national repentance and unity.

According to him, national development, healing and progress are anchored on repentance and spiritual renewal.

“Let it be a centre for unity and it should all be about Jesus. The only thing that can keep us here is unity,” Dogara stated, urging legislators to see the chapel as a place for true repentance and collective reflection.

Also speaking, Senate President Godswill Akpabio linked the spiritual initiative to leadership and governance, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu enjoys support based on the quality of his leadership and reformist agenda. He urged Nigerians to look beyond religious differences and focus on the competence and character of leaders.

“While men legislate for a season, God legislates for eternity. Lawmaking must be guided in conscience, anchored in righteousness and established through prayers,” Akpabio said.

He added that when a nation honours and trusts God, its future is established, stressing that the strength of a nation lies not only in its institutions but also in its recognition of God.

Special prayers were offered for Nigeria, President Tinubu, leaders at all levels of government and members of the National Assembly.

The commissioning of the National Assembly Christian Chapel was witnessed by lawmakers across party lines and faiths, underscoring what participants described as a shared commitment to unity, moral leadership and national progress.
