There was pandemonium on Monday as fire gutted a section of one of the World Trade Centre buildings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The building is the tallest residential and commercial building undergoing construction in the city.

The cause of the fire was not ascertained as at filing this report but our correspondent learnt that the fire started at about 11:30 am as smoke was seen billowing from the 25 storey hitech building.

When our reporter got to the scene of fire incident, he was denied access into the building but a worker in the building who pleaded anonymity said the fire was not serious.

He said internal sprinklers installed in the building were deployed to put the fire off.

“There was a small fire incident at the roof top and immediately we saw the fire, our sprinklers system, because it is a hitect building, was deployed internally and you can see that everything is calm,” he said.

He added that there was no damage to the building.

He disclosed that none of the people working in the building sustained any injury.

Giving a witness account on the outbreak, Mr. Samson Ojo, said that just as he was about alighting from a vehicle at the centre, early in the morning, he saw people running around in panic as they saw smoke emitting from the rooftop of the skyscaper.

However, fire service trucks and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) rescue buses and ambulances were seen within and outside the premises.

The Director, FCT fire service, Mr. Opetusin Julius, could not be reached as at 1:00pm but one of his men said that firemen were still at the scene and so he could not comment on the incident.

The incident caused tension in the area as many people scrambled for safety.

The fire incident was put off in record time.
