The Federal Government has called on wealthy Nigerians, philanthropists, business leaders and corporate organisations to invest in establishing fire stations across the country as part of efforts to improve emergency response and protect lives and property.

Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Adeyemi Samuel Olumode, made the call on Thursday at the One-Day National Stakeholders’ Summit on Fire Safety held in Abuja under the theme, “Building a Resilient Fire Service for the 21st Century.”
Olumode said Nigeria required more strategically located fire stations to reduce emergency response time and bring firefighting services closer to communities.
He maintained that fire safety should not be regarded solely as a government responsibility, urging wealthy individuals, communities and corporate organisations to contribute directly to strengthening firefighting infrastructure.
The Controller General cited the Offa Descendant Association Fire Station, Oyo Town Fire Station, Idanre Fire Station, Bonny Island Fire Station and Kugbo Fire Station as examples of facilities established through interventions outside the Federal Government.
According to him, establishing fire stations should be viewed as an investment in protecting lives and property rather than merely an act of philanthropy.
The summit also coincided with the first anniversary of Olumode’s assumption of office as Controller General on August 14, 2025.
Reviewing the activities of the Service during the period, he disclosed that 40 firefighting appliances had been rehabilitated, while two modern firefighting appliances and more than 2,000 pieces of personal protective equipment had been supplied.
He added that over 700 cadet officers had undergone basic firefighting training and had subsequently been deployed across commands nationwide.
Olumode said the Federal Fire Service had also strengthened its specialised capabilities through counter-terrorism training undertaken in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Armed Forces.
He further disclosed that work was ongoing to upgrade the National Fire Academy, expressing confidence that the institution would become one of Africa’s leading firefighter training facilities when reopened.
The event also witnessed the induction of 37 Public Relations Officers drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory into the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.
Olumode described the induction as historic, saying it was the first time the Service had brought its public relations officers nationwide together for coordinated professional training, recognition and certification.
“This is much more than issuing certificates. We are professionalising the way the Federal Fire Service communicates with Nigerians,” he said.
According to him, officers responsible for public communication must understand strategic and crisis communication, media relations, stakeholder engagement, public education, reputation management and the challenges posed by misinformation during emergencies.
He noted that every fire outbreak presented both an operational and communication challenge, stressing that public trust was important to the Service’s ability to protect lives and property.
The Controller General also commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund for collaborating with the Service on fire safety initiatives in tertiary institutions.
He acknowledged the Tony Elumelu Foundation for partnering with the Federal Fire Service to provide fire safety preparedness training to 7,740 Nigerians, with a target of reaching at least 10 persons in each local government area.
Olumode also praised the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Rightangle PR and other public and private sector partners for supporting the Service.
He urged Nigerians to cooperate with firefighters during emergencies by giving fire appliances unrestricted passage, staying away from unnecessary crowds at incident scenes and providing responders with verified information.
