The federal government has disclosed that its efforts to review the National Migration Policy (NMP) would curb untimely death, maltreatment, discrimination, and other issues migrants encounter when they travel out of Nigeria.

The federal government also identified flooding, banditry, and displacement as some of the factors fueling migration.

Speaking at the Technical Working Group meeting on Migration and development, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Tijani Ahmed, said not less than 6.1million Nigerians are displaced as of November 2024.

Ahmed said: “Migration is a very serious issue because migration is both internal and international, and it is caused by so many displacement as a result of flooding, displacement as a result of banditry, and others.

“The revised National Migration Policy (NMP) would ensure that we reduce the level of irregular migration in this country so that Nigerians will not only migrate regularly, but at least they will migrate where to where they can have greener pasture.

“This policy will work assiduously to ensure that our Nigerians do not migrate irregularly and go into areas where they would probably lose their lives at the end of the day because as it stands, most Nigerians die as a result of irregular migration through the Mediterranean Sea and that is why we are coming up with this policy.

This policy will suggest corrections, give directions and methods by which every Nigerian will abide for the benefit of all.”

The HFC also noted that the rate of displacement in the country was worrisome.

“We are very worried about the level of displacement in the country because we are experiencing an increase in the level of displacement in this country. As I’m speaking with you today, we have not less than 6.1 million displaced Nigerians.

“So, the issue of displacement is a major issue to the commission. That is why we are doing everything possible to ensure that those people who were displaced and living in the camps are removed from the camps through the provision of skills acquisition and other programmes of the federal government to give them a source of livelihood,” he said.

He also said efforts are ongoing to repatriate over 80,000 Nigerian refugees in Chad, Cameroon, and Nigeria.

He said: “We have a lot of Nigerians living in Cameroon, Niger, and Chad as refugees. In Cameroon, we have about 53,000 Nigerians that are living in Cameroon as refugees. In Niger, we have about 25,000 of them, and 12,000 to 15,000 in Chad.

“Particularly those that are living in Cameroon and Niger have written officially to say that they want to return home because we are now experiencing relative peace.

He added that the commission will ensure that all Nigerians that are living within Cameroon, Niger, and the Republic of Chad are repatriated.

The Acting Chief of Mission from the International Organisation for Migration, Paola Pace, said migration has become a significant issue at the forefront of regional, national, and global agendas.

Pace who was represented by Medeiros Ana said migration is critical as it connects people, and economies, and offers immense opportunities if well-managed

Speaking on the national policy, Pace said: “We can ensure that the revised policy not only addresses current migration challenges but also positions Nigeria as a model for effective migration governance in the region. The review of the national migration policy will benefit migrants, host communities, and the nation as a whole.”
