The Obidient Movement, the political support base of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, has faulted the Senate over its passage of the Electoral Act amendment bill without making electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

The group described the Senate’s decision as a clear signal that the government lacks commitment to conducting credible, free and fair elections, despite widespread public expectations for meaningful electoral reforms.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, said the refusal to approve electronic transmission of results undermines the sincerity of the electoral reform process and preserves practices Nigerians have consistently rejected.

Although the Senate passed the Electoral Act amendment bill, it declined to adopt electronic transmission of results, a reform widely regarded as critical to improving transparency and restoring public trust in the electoral system.

According to Tanko, the decision exposes the government’s unwillingness to address flaws associated with manual result collation.

“That shows clearly that they are not yet ready for credible, free and fair elections,” he said.

He warned that Nigerians must be prepared to challenge elections conducted under what he described as a compromised framework.

“So Nigerians should be ready to challenge these elections headlong, across all preparations in every region,” Tanko stated.

He stressed that electronic transmission of results is essential to eliminating human interference in the collation process, noting that manipulation is more likely under the current manual system.

“The major purpose of electronic transmission is to remove human interference in result collation, unlike what happens in manual collation centres where manipulation can take place,” he said.

Tanko added that the Senate’s action reflects a broader attitude within government towards electoral credibility, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant.

“This is a pointer that this government is not ready for credible, free and fair elections. Nigerians should be prepared for a strong contest to reclaim and protect our democracy,” he said.
