The Federal Government has revealed plans to explore a broader continental response to recurring xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, warning that the issue is becoming a threat to African unity.

Speaking during a television interview on Thursday, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, said Nigeria remains deeply concerned about reports of violence and intimidation directed at foreign nationals living in South Africa.

According to the minister, the government is committed to engaging South African authorities through diplomatic channels to ensure the protection of Nigerians residing in the country. He stressed that inflammatory rhetoric and actions targeting people based on their nationality are unacceptable and must be addressed decisively.

Enikanolaiye noted that Nigeria would continue discussions with South African officials at various levels of government while also considering taking the matter to the African Union if the situation persists.

He explained that xenophobic attacks are no longer just a bilateral issue between Nigeria and South Africa but a challenge that affects the entire continent and undermines efforts toward African integration and cooperation.

The minister further emphasized that all African countries share a responsibility to protect residents and visitors regardless of their nationality, adding that violence against fellow Africans contradicts the principles upon which regional unity is built.

Meanwhile, the first group of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa arrived in Lagos on Thursday as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing repatriation exercise. A total of 268 returnees were brought home aboard an Air Peace flight following recent attacks and growing security concerns.

Government officials said more evacuation flights are expected in the coming days as additional Nigerians seek assistance to return home. Reports indicate that over 1,000 citizens have expressed interest in leaving South Africa amid fears over their safety.

Authorities have assured affected citizens that efforts are ongoing to safeguard their welfare while diplomatic engagements continue with the South African government.
