The Federal Government has strongly refuted allegations by former U.S. President Donald Trump accusing Nigeria of genocide against Christians, describing the claims as a “dangerous distortion” orchestrated by foreign lobbyists.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this during a world press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, held alongside the presidential media team. He maintained that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign remains impartial and committed to protecting all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity.

Idris said the government took note of the U.S. decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious freedom violations but insisted that the move was based on “a misreading and misjudging” of Nigeria’s complex security realities.

“Terrorism does not exclusively target any religious or ethnic group. It is a war against all peace-loving Nigerians,” Idris declared, describing reports of state complicity as “misinformation or faulty data.”

He alleged that intelligence reports have traced the source of the allegations to foreign lobbyists with links to criminal networks operating in Nigeria.

“We have seen a correlation between some lobbyists operating in the U.S. and local actors who amplify false narratives abroad. This has become a serious issue of concern to the government,” he said.

The minister assured that investigations into such activities are ongoing, adding that President Bola Tinubu remains resolute in his determination to defeat terrorism and restore peace.

“Nigeria welcomes more collaboration and partnership with the United States and other allies to eliminate terrorism on Nigerian soil,” Idris affirmed.

Idris highlighted what he described as “real and remarkable” progress made by Nigeria’s security forces including the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement where personnel of all faiths operate in unity.

He said the recent overhaul of the nation’s Service Chiefs was designed to inject “fresh energy, innovation, and accountability” into security operations, in line with President Tinubu’s directive that “every inch of Nigerian territory must be secured.”
