The Federal Government has debunked claims circulating in the media that it has raised the minimum age for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) from 10 to 12 years, describing the report as false, misleading, and not reflective of any official policy.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Federal Ministry of Education through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, clarified that the minimum age requirement for JSS1 admission remains 10 years.
“The Federal Ministry of Education has noted with concern a false and misleading publication in a newspaper claiming that the Federal Government has set a new minimum age of 12 years for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1). The Ministry wishes to categorically state that this report is entirely inaccurate, did not emanate from any official source, and does not reflect government policy,” the statement read in part.
The Ministry emphasized that no child should complete primary school below the age of 10, warning the public and education stakeholders to disregard any suggestion to the contrary.
It further reiterated the federal policy that sets the minimum age for admission into Nigerian universities at 16 years, regardless of how early a student completes secondary education.
“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has reiterated that the prescribed minimum age for admission into Nigerian universities is 16 years. This policy is consistent, non-negotiable, and applies uniformly,” the statement added.
The Ministry urged schools, parents, media organisations, and the public to verify information through official channels before publication or circulation.
It assured that the Ministry remains committed to ensuring the developmental appropriateness of educational policies in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration.
