The Federal Government has assured prepaid meter users in Nigeria that their meter credit balance will remain intact during the upcoming meter upgrade program to be conducted by electricity distribution companies (DisCos).

The reassurance came from the Managing Director of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Aliyu Tahir, through a statement on Sunday. NEMSA is the agency responsible for ensuring all power sector meters and equipment meet required standards.

According to Tahir, customers have nothing to fear regarding the safety of credits on their meters, affirming that balances will be fully preserved post-upgrade. He described the upgrade as a one-time process that will not impact subsequent token purchases and energy use calculations after completion.

The statement comes as DisCos prepare to commence a meter upgrade exercise in line with new Standard Transfer Specifications to address the impending rollover of Token Identifiers (TIDs) used for meter readings. DisCos will provide special Key Change Tokens to meter users to reset the TID system during the upgrade.

NEMSA mandates that meters upgraded through the tokens will maintain certified accuracy in energy measurement and charging. Meter manufacturers will adjust production to the new specifications requiring a 2014 base date.

The upgrade will involve entering the Key Change Token into meters to reset the TID memory to zero and replace the cryptographic meter key. Tahir emphasized this will not accelerate or decelerate meters.

By giving advance notice and assurances, NEMSA hopes to preempt panic among prepaid meter consumers. Tahir urged users to collaborate with DisCos to complete the upgrade before November 2024 to avoid meter functionality disruptions when the TID rollover occurs.

The statement portrays the government’s efforts to safeguard consumers during the critical meter transition and maintain trust in prepaid metering infrastructure.
