The Federal Government has approved the concession of King’s College, Lagos, to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association in what the association described as the beginning of a new era for one of Nigeria’s oldest and most prestigious secondary schools.

Announcing the development at a press conference on Monday, held at the Metropolitan Club, Victoria Island, Lagos, KCOBA President, Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, said the approval marked “one of the most consequential developments” in the institution’s 116-year history and signalled the commencement of what he called the “King’s College Renaissance.”

According to him, the concession is not a sale or privatisation of the school but a new governance arrangement that will allow the alumni association to partner with the Federal Government in restoring and modernising the institution.

“There are occasions that simply mark the passage of time, and there are occasions that redefine history. Today belongs firmly to the latter,” Ibrahim-Imam said.

He described King’s College, established in 1909, as a symbol of educational excellence that has produced distinguished Nigerians in public service, the judiciary, diplomacy, business, medicine, engineering, academia and other sectors.

While acknowledging the school’s rich legacy, he said its infrastructure and systems had deteriorated over the years, making comprehensive intervention imperative.

“Today, that trajectory changes. Today begins the King’s College Renaissance,” he declared.

The KCOBA president expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving the concession, describing the decision as an act of “innovative leadership” and a demonstration of confidence in responsible citizenship and institutional stewardship.

He also commended the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, for supporting the initiative and for his broader education reform agenda.

According to Ibrahim-Imam, the concession should not be interpreted as the Federal Government relinquishing ownership of the college.

“It is not the sale of King’s College. It is not the privatisation of King’s College. It is not the abandonment of King’s College by the Federal Government.

“Rather, it is the establishment of a new governance framework through which KCOBA will partner with the government to restore, strengthen, modernise and sustain one of Nigeria’s greatest educational institutions.”

He assured Nigerians that the school’s federal character would remain intact, stressing that King’s College would continue to admit students from across the country irrespective of ethnic, religious or socio-economic backgrounds.

“The strength of King’s College has always lain in its diversity. That diversity is not merely a policy; it is part of the DNA of King’s College,” he said.

Addressing concerns about affordability, Ibrahim-Imam said the association had no intention of transforming the school into an exclusive institution for the wealthy.

Instead, he said KCOBA had established a N100bn collegium fund to ensure that the financial burden of transforming the college would not be transferred to parents.

“We believe that the children of ordinary Nigerians deserve extraordinary educational opportunities,” he stated.

The association also unveiled an ambitious transformation blueprint built around seven strategic pillars, including governance reforms, infrastructure renewal, teacher development, digital transformation, academic excellence, leadership development and the integration of the college’s main campus and annexe into a unified educational system.

Under the infrastructure programme, KCOBA plans to rehabilitate classrooms, laboratories, libraries, hostels, sports facilities, healthcare centres and sanitation systems, while introducing environmentally sustainable campus development.

On technology, the association promised to deploy artificial intelligence-assisted learning, robotics laboratories, digital libraries, broadband connectivity, coding programmes, innovation hubs, electronic administration and a comprehensive learning management system.

Ibrahim-Imam said the goal was to position King’s College among the world’s leading secondary schools by strengthening STEM education, entrepreneurship, research, debating, music, sports and international partnerships.

He also announced the establishment of the King’s College Education Trust to oversee the school’s governance and long-term sustainability.

According to him, elder statesman and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, will serve as President of King’s College Lagos and Chairman of the KCET Board of Trustees, while businessman Sunny Kuku will serve as Vice President of the college and Vice Chairman of the trust.

To finance the transformation agenda, Ibrahim-Imam said the N100bn collegium fund would support infrastructure, technology, teacher training, scholarships, student welfare and institutional sustainability.

He disclosed that the fund would be chaired by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, with businessman Atedo Peterside serving as Vice Chairman.

Former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, was also named among the initiative’s key leaders.

Demonstrating personal commitment to the project, Ibrahim-Imam announced a personal donation of N1bn on behalf of himself, his family and friends.

He also revealed that former Chairman of the KCOBA Board of Trustees, Chief Philip Asiodu, and the current chairman, Alhaji Okunnu, had each donated N100m, describing the contributions as lifetime sacrifices.

Calling on corporate Nigeria, foundations, development partners and alumni across the world to support the initiative, Ibrahim-Imam described investment in King’s College as an investment in Nigeria’s future leadership and human capital.

“The work ahead will require sacrifice. It will require patience. It will require collaboration. It will require accountability. But above all, it will require faith,” he said.

He urged the alumni worldwide to contribute financially, offer mentorship, volunteer their expertise and participate actively in rebuilding the institution.

“May history record that when King’s College called, Kingsmen answered. May history record that from this day forward, King’s College Lagos entered its greatest era,” he said.
