Nigerian Army intelligence officers have detained a female soldier Ruth Ogunleye after her viral TikTok video alleging sexual harassment by senior officers.

Authoritative military sources disclosed she was flown from Lagos to Abuja on Tuesday accompanied by plainclothes military police.

The Corporal had accused three Colonels of oppression for denying her passes and courses for rejecting their advances since she was posted to the Cantonment Medical Centre in Ojo, Lagos last year.

Additionally, she claimed being unlawfully ejected from her quarters, locked up over trumped up mental illness claims, and having her salary frozen from February 2022 till date.

Most damning were the soldier’s rape attempt allegations against a Colonel who later convinced others she was insane. Her video came after failed petitions and interventions by colleagues.

While demanding investigation and justice should harm befall her, the victim expected punitive reprisals for whistleblowing entrenched military sexual abuses.

Responding last Friday, Army Spokesman Brig-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu said she had not officially reported her ordeal through the available institutional channels.

As Nigerians again condemn violence against female troops, women’s rights activists describe the development as retaliation meant to mute agitations against sexual violations.

They urged the Chief of Army Staff to demonstrate commitment to reforming systemic military discrimination by transparent action on the matter.

Human rights groups also called for the immediate release of the detained Lance Corporal, her safety guarantees, and sanctions if investigations validate her allegations.
