The Federal Ministry of Education has declared the recent appointments of the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, as null and void.

In a letter addressed to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council, the Ministry expressed its disapproval of the appointment process.

The letter, signed by Mrs. R. G. Ilyasu on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of Education, stated that during a meeting held on October 25, 2024, between the University Council and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, it was agreed that no appointments should be made without reconciling with the aggrieved parties in the University Community.

However, the Ministry noted that the University Council proceeded to appoint a Vice-Chancellor on October 29, 2024, without the presence of the Ministry’s representative, internal council members, and other stakeholders. The Ministry deemed this action as a “gross disregard to constituted Authority” and not in line with extant provisions.

Consequently, the Ministry has directed the University Council to put all other appointments on hold pending the assumption of duty by the new Honourable Minister of Education. The letter also requested the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council to accept the assurances of the esteemed regards and considerations of the Permanent Secretary of Education.
