The Federal High Court of Nigeria has moved to assure a legal practitioner, Maxwell C. Opara, of heightened security measures following an alleged physical assault against him within the court premises in Abuja.

In a letter dated May 14, 2024, and signed by the Chief Registrar, Sulaiman Arnida Hassan, the court expressed regret over the unfortunate incident which occurred on May 7, 2024.

According to the letter, Opara, who practices under the law firm Chibunnam Chambers, had written to the Honorable Chief Judge, complaining about being physically assaulted and attacked by one Mr. Jesam Michael Ubi and his cohorts within the Federal High Court premises in Abuja.

Responding to the complaint, the Chief Registrar stated that the Chief Judge had directed for intensified security measures to be implemented across the headquarters and all divisions of the Federal High Court. This is to ensure that such ugly incidents do not reoccur.

“We are by this letter writing to inform you that the Court has intensified security measures in the headquarters and all our divisions to ensure that such ugly incident does not reoccur,” the letter read in part.

Furthermore, the Chief Registrar assured Opara of adequate protection during his subsequent appearances at the court premises.

The letter stressed the court’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for legal practitioners and all those who have legitimate business within its premises.

Incidents of physical assault or violence of any kind against lawyers while discharging their professional duties have been widely condemned by the Nigerian Bar Association and other stakeholders in the justice sector.
