The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed claims of a new terrorist group operating within the country, following warnings from the Turkish government regarding the presence of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) in Nigeria.
Turkish Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, raised concerns during a dinner event hosted by the Turkish Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday to commemorate Turkey’s Democracy and National Unity Day. Poroy alleged that FETO members were active in Nigeria, particularly using schools and health services as fronts for their activities.
“The presence of such an organisation poses a threat to every country in which it operates. Unfortunately, the FETO terrorist organisation still maintains its activities in Nigeria, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare,” Poroy stated. He further urged Nigerian authorities to remain vigilant against the organisation’s operations.
However, in a contrasting response, Maj Gen Adamu Laka, Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, told newsmen that there was no new terrorist group in Nigeria and reassured citizens against panic. “There is no new terrorist group in Nigeria. There’s no need to panic,” he affirmed.
FETO is reportedly linked to the late Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 83. Gulen, once an ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was accused by the Erdogan-led government of masterminding a failed coup attempt in Turkey in 2016. Gulen was convicted in absentia for attempting to overthrow the Turkish state, though he denied the allegations.
Gulen’s network, which includes schools, charities, and organisations, operates globally and has a reported presence in over 160 countries, including Nigeria. Despite Turkish claims, there has been no public evidence or official confirmation tying these institutions to terrorist activities within Nigerian territory.
The Federal Government’s denial aims to assure Nigerians that the country’s security agencies are alert and that no new terrorist threats have emerged, even as it continues to monitor all groups operating within its borders.
