A suspected member of a kidnap gang that abducted two herders and a driver near Daku community in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been arrested at the Izom Cattle Market in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.

The arrest, which occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025, was confirmed by a member of a local vigilante group, Ishaku Daniel. According to Daniel, the suspect was identified by one of the victims, who spotted him while he was attempting to purchase items at the bustling cattle market.

Daily Trust had earlier reported that the victims were abducted on June 9 while returning from the same Izom market after selling their cows. The kidnappers had reportedly demanded and received a ransom of N15 million before releasing the hostages.

Daniel said the suspect, who was neatly dressed in a kaftan, was immediately apprehended by vigilante operatives. A crowd quickly gathered, and a mob attempted to lynch him, but the suspect was rescued by the vigilantes.

Upon searching a sack the suspect was carrying, the vigilantes found packets of cigarettes, tramadol, cough syrup, and Indian hemp concealed inside.

The suspect was subsequently handed over to security personnel from Lambata, also in Niger State.

A security source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect had confessed to being part of the kidnap gang. “He is currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to locate other members of the gang,” the source said.
