The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has said that 69 persons have so far died from Cholera outbreak in the territory.

This is also as the FCT has reported 22 new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The Acting Secretary, Health and Human Secretariat, Dr. Mohammed Kawu, gave the figures yesterday at a media briefing after the FCT Emergency Operation Treatment Committee met with the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, to review the situation.

Kawu, who appeared with Dr. Sadik Sani, Director Public Health, said the Cholera cases that were recorded out of suspected 1,000 cases had been treated and discharged.

He identified the epicentre of the gastro enteritis disease in the territory as the Byzhin community in Kubwa, Ushafa in Bwari Area Council and Gwagwa in Abuja Municipal Area Council.

Kawu said the medical committee had gone to the affected locations and had directed the important steps that needed to be taken in order to mitigate another outbreak next year.

“What we are doing to avoid another outbreak is to ensure we provide potable water to all communities in FCT and good sanitation because as you know, Cholera is a disease of poor hygiene and lack of potable water. The minister has directed that FCT Water Board and Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) should work with us closely. We are directed to come out with what FCT should do so that the issue of Cholera is overcome.

“The most important thing is that the cases have gone down and there are more important things to be done in those areas so that next year we won’t go through the same circle again,” Kawu said.
He also said the FCT had reported 22 new cases of COVI9-19, describing the spike in new cases as alarming and worrying.

He added that nine persons were presently on admission at the COVID-19 treatment centres.

The health secretary said all travellers arriving through the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja from countries including India, South Africa, the UK, Turkey and Brazil that are ravaged by the deadly Delta variant were mandatorily quarantined and subjected to test by the health authority before they were allowed to pass through immigration.

He said analysis of the positive cases at the laboratory in Gaduwa revealed the presence of the Delta variant in one of the cases.
