An eminent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN has bared his mind on the rising Insecurity in Nigeria.

In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), Falana says on May 29, 2019, he led the human rights community protest in Lagos against the wave of insecurity sweeping through the country in many parts of the country but “for reasons best known to the authorities, our call for urgent recruitment of well equipped police personnel and job creation for our unemployed youths was ignored. https://punchng.com/falana-activists-protest-against-insecurity/

The learned silk made reference to the resolution of the Senate and the House of Representatives, in separate sessions, condemning the rising insecurity in Nigeria. “Both Houses passed a resolution against the seeming collapse of the security architecture of the neo colonial State presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari. Three days ago, the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) participated in public protests against the incessant killing of Nigerian people by terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other armed gangs. In particular, Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Reddemed Christian Church of Christ who has always prayed for the Buhari administration deserves kudos for taking part in the demonstration.”

Falana says “Instead of adopting concrete measures to restore law and order in the country the Presidency has continued to engage in unleashing venomous verbal attacks on aggrieved Nigerians for daring to call on the authorities to perform their constitutional duty of protecting the life and property of every person living in Nigeria. Recently, some lumpen elements were hired to protest against me for alleged “judicial blackmail of the armed forces.” However, the Presidency should be reminded that Nigerians have not forgotten the fact that on November 11, 2014, the leaders of the All Progressive Congress led by General Muhammadu Buhari took part in public protests which held in Abuja against insecurity in the country under the Jonathan administration. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/buhari-amaechi-others-protest-rally-fg/

He therefore Advises Senator Eyinanya Abaribe to “ignore the incendiary tautrums oozing out of the Presidency over his call on President Buhari to call it quits. After all, General Buhari had cause to call on President Jonathan to resign when it was felt that he had been overwhelmed by the security challenge confronting the nation at the material time. https://www.thecable.ng/flashback-in-2013-buhari-asked-jonathan-to-resign-over-insecurity

Falana says the Committee formed by President Buhari is an imaginary ploy as its recommendations would be ignored “Indeed, President Buhari surprised the Nigerian people when he expressed surprise over the rate of insecurity in Nigeria during a meeting with a delegation of traditional rulers from Niger State last week. The embarrassing statement is a confirmation of the fact that the service chiefs and other presidential aides have not been briefing the President on the worsening security situation in the country. Now that the President has realised the state of insecurity he has set up a committee to recommend measures for the restoration of law and order. With respect, the committee is a diversionary ploy as its recommendations will be ignored by the Presidency. Instead of wasting precious time and resources on another committee we urge President Buhari to ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the following administrative and judicial panels of inquiry:

“1. Mohammed Uwais Electoral Reform Panel;

2. Ahmed Lemu Electoral Reform Panel;

3. Ken Nnamani Electoral Reform Panel;

4. Georgewill Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights Abuse by members of the Armed Forces;

5. Administrative Panel on Abuse by members of Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS);

6. Presidential Committees on Police Reforms;

7. Presidenctial Panel on Probe Arms Procurement (2007-2015);

8. Presidential Panel on Taraba Killings;”

Falana advised that “In line with the Manifesto of the All Progressive Congress and the recommendation of one of the Presidential Panels the federal government should facilitate the establishment of state police. And as a matter of urgency the security chiefs should be sacked and replaced by the President on the grounds that their tenure has since expired. Since there can be no lasting security in the midst of grinding poverty we urge the federal, state and local governments to set aside a special fund for job creation for our army of unemployed young people.”

He lamented however, that “The statement credited to President Buhari that 90% of Boko Haram victims are Muslims is very unfortunate as it is meant to divert attention from the allegation of official incompetence in addressing the safety of the life of all citizens. Why should the federal government descend to the level of identifying victims of terrorist attacks on the basis of their religious identity? We urge the Nigerian people and the media not to be distracted in mounting pressure on the federal government to discharge its constitutional duty of protecting all persons living in Nigerians including foreigners.”
