Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s handling of the Rivers State crisis, describing the suspension of the state’s governor as a “clear abuse of power.”

Speaking during a colloquium organized by the Ask Tomorrow Foundation, Jonathan, who is from the Niger Delta region, warned that the political developments in Rivers State represent a broader threat to good governance and the integrity of the country’s democratic institutions.

Jonathan addressed the ongoing situation in Rivers State, where the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara has sparked political controversy. He argued that the key players in the country’s political and judicial systems—the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary—are fully aware of the right course of action, yet they have chosen to ignore it. Referring to their inaction as “pretending to sleep,” Jonathan warned that this abuse of power could have far-reaching consequences.

“From the executive to the parliament to the judiciary, the abuse of power is clear,” Jonathan said. “When people in positions of power do not act in the interest of justice, the repercussions are felt by everyone.”

Jonathan went on to stress the importance of good governance, noting that decisions made by the country’s leadership have a direct impact on the nation’s standing globally. He explained that the public’s perception of Nigeria is influenced not only by corruption but also by the way political power is wielded.

The former president underscored the importance of promoting social change through leadership that embraces values like diversity, equity, and inclusion, noting that these principles have the power to unite the country and create long-lasting solutions to its challenges. He also highlighted the critical role that transparency and accountability in governance play in fostering national unity.

Jonathan, however, expressed disappointment with the handling of the Rivers crisis, urging President Tinubu to respect the nation’s democratic processes and avoid undermining Nigeria’s federal structure. He called for a return to governance rooted in fairness and justice, warning that without a genuine commitment to doing what is right, the nation risks derailing its democratic aspirations.

The event, aimed at promoting social change and empowerment through diversity, equity, and inclusion, saw various distinguished figures in attendance, with Jonathan taking the opportunity to address critical issues concerning the state of governance in the country.
