In this interview with TheNigerialawyer, Olumba Chukwuemeka Esq speaks on the Legal Hacker’s International summit for 2017, and what Legal Hackers is all about. You are the organizer of Legal Hackers Nigeria. Could you tell us what Legal Hackers is all about? In a nutshell, Legal Hackers is a global movement of lawyers, law students, policymakers, technologist and academics who explore and develop creative solutions to some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of law and technology. Through local Meetups, Hackathons, and Workshops. Legal Hackers spot issues and opportunities where technology can improve and inform the practice of law and where law, legal practice, legal education and policy can adapt to the rapidly changing technologies. So Legal Hackers Nigeria is a Nigerian chapter of this global movement When was Legal Hackers established? The global Legal Hackers was established 9-10 years ago. But Legal Hackers Nigeria was established in 2016. We also gathered that 2017 Legal Hackers International Summit will take place in New York, could you educate us on what this event is all about? The Summit will be the biggest gathering and network of Legal Technology Experts in the world. This third annual, invitation-only Summit will convene Legal Hackers organizers and legal-innovation thought leaders from around the world to share experience and knowledge and to chart the path ahead of the Legal Hackers Movement. We will hear from people like Andrew Aruda and his ROSS (Which is the first Artificial Intelligence Lawyers in the world). We will share his thoughts and what they are doing at Ross Intel. There will be speakers and workshops on IBM Watson and what they are doing in the legal ecosystem. There will be several presentation from both legal tech and Civic Innovation communities. It simply will be power packed. As one of the speakers at the upcoming summit, what is unique about this year’s international summit? For the first time, I am going to tell the Nigeria story as it relates to our efforts in this regards. To show that we are making modest efforts to be part of this global movement and network with those interested in coming into our space. How can one be a member of this elite group? Simply a passion to do things differently in the legal space. If you have that passion, you can always reach out to us or join us on our meetup page “Imo Legal Hackers (Nigeria). We are looking for young vibrant lawyers who are interested in what technology will do in the legal ecosystem and who are interested in being part of the great change. We are also looking for experts in the different fields of computing and in fact any person can be a member of Legal Hackers if you have the passion to effect changes in the Legal Ecosystem. It is observed that you are one of the speakers at the oncoming event. Can someone who is not a member of Legal Hackers present a paper at the Summit? The answer is YES. Most of our keynote speakers are not members of Legal Hackers. We love to have tech savvy lawyers and people who contributes in policy formulation attend and speak at our events.
