Arise TV Morning Show anchor, Dr. Reuben Abati, has faulted Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments on former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, saying the minister has no moral standing to dictate the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking during the Morning Show on Tuesday, Abati said Wike had overreached himself by asking Jonathan to remain an elder statesman and by declaring that Obi’s return to the PDP would destroy the party.
“Wike is not in a position to advise Jonathan or to question Obi’s character,” Abati stated. “In fact, if Wike wants to talk about character, he should first examine his own. He was the one that destroyed the PDP, yet he now parades himself as a defender of the party.”
The veteran journalist criticized the media for giving Wike a constant platform to “talk recklessly and unintelligently” about political opponents. According to him, the press has a responsibility to ensure that those disparaged by Wike are given equal rights of reply, rather than allowing one-sided attacks.
“Yesterday, he was talking about Peter Obi, about Jonathan, about Nasir El-Rufai. What gives him that moral high ground?” Abati queried. “The media should stop enabling a minister of the Federal Republic to overreach himself, especially when he is already in another political party.”
Abati stressed that while Wike is free to address matters concerning the FCT, his interference in party politics undermines credibility. He described the minister’s habit of attacking perceived rivals as a misuse of his office and influence.
“Wike himself has said that nobody can advise him, so why should he feel entitled to advise Jonathan or anyone else?” Abati asked.
The Arise TV anchor concluded that Wike’s political meddling, coupled with the media’s uncritical amplification of his views, continues to pose challenges for internal party cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
