The ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest, which commenced on August 1 in response to the hardship experienced by citizens, has taken a concerning turn as protesters in Kano were seen waving what appeared to be the Russian flag.

The incident has raised alarm among prominent Nigerians, including former diplomats and military officers, who worry about the potential security implications for the country.

Photos and videos of the protesters chanting “We don’t want bad government” in Hausa while waving the Russian flag alongside the Nigerian flag have gone viral, sparking discussions about the growing support for Russia and anti-West sentiment in Northern Nigeria. Bulama Bukarti, a lawyer, noted that the trend is likely to expand and could be exploited by malign actors.

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad called on authorities to monitor the situation and take precautions, while award-winning journalist Philip Obaji Jr. suggested that President Vladimir Putin and Russia must be excited about the display of Russian flags during the protest.

Security experts have also weighed in on the matter, with retired Brig.-Gen. Bashir Adewinbi cautioning Nigerians against conspiring with external forces to undermine the country’s democracy and security. Former Nigerian ambassador to the Philippines, Yemi Farounbi, urged the protest organizers to avoid any external influence, warning that Nigeria should not become a pawn in the ideological warfare between the West and the East.

Ambassador Adesola Abolurin, a retired Director at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called for the intervention of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), attributing the call for Russian intervention in Northern Nigeria to the closeness of Niger Republic to the region.

Professor Bola Akinterinwa, a former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, suggested that those waving the Russian flag and dancing during the protests might not be Nigerians but rather Nigeriens. He warned that the situation could prompt a coup d’état if not properly addressed.

Mike Ejiofor, a former Director of DSS, emphasized the need for the government and security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering efforts and not handle the issue with kid gloves.

Col. Abdulwahab Ademola Lawal, the Head of Research Savannah Centre for Development and Training, highlighted the expanding Russian influence in Africa and the potential challenges it poses to the sovereignty of African nations.

In response to the allegations, the Press Secretary of the Russian Embassy, Yury Paramonov, denied Russia’s involvement in the ongoing protest, stating that the Russian Federation is not involved in the current events in Nigeria and does not provide any material or financial support to the protesters.

As the situation unfolds, Nigerians and the Federal Government are urged to remain vigilant and guard against foreign incursion that could destabilize the country’s security and democracy.
