*Seeks Benefits for Ex-Judges, Young Lawyers

Former Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Bamare Bansi, noted the importance of the executive arm of government considering a welfare package for both serving and retired judicial officers.
He expressed concern that neglecting the welfare of retired judicial officers might discourage younger judges from giving their best efforts.
Justice Bansi noted the unfortunate situation where retired judges in Adamawa State have not received adequate care or their due benefits for years.
Speaking at the commencement of the 2023 Law Week in Yola, Justice Bansi highlighted the need to bridge the gap between the executive and judiciary branches, especially under the theme “Building Bridges, Building Nation: A Joint Commitment” for this year’s Law Week.
He also urged young lawyers to show humility and respect towards their senior colleagues, emphasizing that such attitudes would facilitate better learning experiences.
Meanwhile, the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsatu Abdulraham, underscored the importance of the bench and bar in the legal system, stating that the focus remains on these sectors due to the ongoing court cases.
She emphasized the necessity for both branches to work diligently, stay above board, and ensure justice is served to combat corruption in Nigeria.
Addressing the challenges faced by the legal profession, the Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Hassan Maigawa, highlighted the existing gap in the understanding of the law among the common people.
He stressed the need for collaborative efforts between the bar, the bench, and security agencies to bridge this gap and ensure public comprehension of legal matters.
Regarding the current state of the legal system, Maigawa acknowledged the challenging times the judiciary is facing. He called for a balanced approach in criticizing court judgments, expressing concern about the public castigation of judges by lawyers through social media and other platforms.
Maigawa stressed the importance of constructive criticism without undermining the integrity of the judiciary.
