Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has written to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) requesting the immediate transfer of his client’s case from Abuja to Lagos State.

Effiong is representing Chioma Blessing Edoka, who was arrested and flown to Abuja over a Facebook post criticizing a product by food company Erisco Foods Limited.

In the letter dated October 4th, Effiong argued detaining and prosecuting Chioma in Abuja has no legal justification since both she and Erisco are based in Lagos.

He narrated how Chioma was arrested in church without invitation and subjected to threats and humiliation by the IGP Monitoring Unit in Abuja.

Effiong said Chioma, a nursing mother, was coerced to write an apology letter to Erisco at the police headquarters before she could be released on bail.

He expressed dismay at the police’s conduct, insisting they have no business meddling in a civil dispute between a customer and company over a product review.

The human rights lawyer maintained that Chioma’s case is purely civil and Erisco had even issued a pre-action notice before improperly deploying the police.

Effiong urged the IGP to transfer Chioma’s case file to Lagos as she cannot afford the burden of travelling frequently to Abuja for prosecution.

He argued that Lagos, as the location where the alleged offense occurred, is the appropriate jurisdiction for the matter.

The request for transfer aims to ensure Chioma is not oppressed and denied fair hearing in the ongoing controversy with Erisco Foods Limited.
