A former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has called for greater inclusiveness in the leadership selection process of the Nigerian Bar Association, stressing that every lawyer should have a voice in determining the association’s leadership.

Akangbe made the call amid ongoing controversy surrounding the forthcoming 2026 NBA General Elections and a recent court order affecting the presidential race.

In a statement titled “NBA Elections: Every Voice Should Count!”, the senior lawyer emphasized that the leadership of the association must reflect the collective will of all members of the Bar, rather than the preferences of a particular bloc or privileged group.

According to him, the NBA exists to lead and serve the entire legal community, from the youngest members of the Bar to the most senior members, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

“The leadership of the NBA must reflect the collective will of all lawyers, not the preferences of a single bloc or a privileged few. Every voice matters, from the youngest members of the Bar to our most distinguished Senior Advocates of Nigeria,” he said.

Akangbe further noted that the era when the leadership of the association could be determined by only a few individuals was over, stressing that inclusive leadership and broad participation are essential for strengthening the Bar and ensuring fair representation.

His remarks come shortly after the Nigerian Bar Association became the subject of a legal dispute over the conduct of its 2026 presidential election.

Recently, the High Court of Oyo State sitting in Ibadan granted an interim injunction restraining the NBA and its officers from recognising or processing the nomination of any candidate other than the consensus candidate presented by the Incorporated Trustees of Egbe Amofin O’odua for the office of NBA President in the forthcoming 2026 election.

The order was issued by Justice Y. S. Adekunle in Suit No. I/205/2026 following a motion ex parte filed before the court. The matter was adjourned to March 10, 2026, for hearing of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.

The suit was instituted by the Incorporated Trustees of Egbe Amofin O’odua against several defendants, including the NBA, its President Afam Osigwe, SAN, the Body of Benchers, the General Council of the Bar, the Federal Ministry of Justice through the Attorney General of the Federation, and Aham Ejelam, SAN, Chairman of the NBA Electoral Committee.
