The lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator Okey Ezea of the Labour Party, has passed away.

Ezea, popularly known as Ideke, reportedly died on Tuesday in the United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

His death was announced by popular on-air personality Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, who wrote on Facebook, “Sad News. Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North, is dead… Rest in Peace.”

An elder statesman and close associate, Chief Nkem Ossai, also confirmed the development. He described the late senator as a man with a heart of gold whose death has thrown Nsukka and the entire Enugu North zone into deep mourning.

Ossai said many residents and supporters were shocked by the news, especially as Ezea had reportedly recovered from a partial stroke about three months ago.

“It is a sad day. Nsukka has been thrown into mourning. Enugu North has lost a dedicated man who vowed to restore and develop his senatorial zone. The atmosphere has been sombre since the news broke,” he stated.

Senator Ezea was the only remaining Labour Party member from Enugu State in the National Assembly, following the defection of other lawmakers from the state to the All Progressives Congress.

His death is seen as a major loss to the political landscape of Enugu State, where he was regarded as a committed advocate for development and good governance.
