The Enugu State Government has strongly condemned the gruesome murder of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya of Nsukka Catholic Diocese by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday, September 19, 2025, along the Alumona–Eha Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area, where the cleric was ambushed and shot dead.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the government described the killing as cowardly and cold-blooded. It commiserated with the late priest’s immediate family, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, and the wider Catholic faithful.
Father Eya, who served as the parish priest of Saint Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu, was reportedly returning from Enugu Urban when assailants on a motorcycle intercepted his Toyota Camry. Witnesses said the attackers first shot at the vehicle’s tyres to immobilize it before shooting the cleric at close range, leaving him dead on the spot.
“We initially thought they were kidnappers. But, considering that they were only interested in killing the priest, it is clear they were assassins,” a resident explained.
A video clip circulating on social media showed the priest’s ash-coloured Toyota Camry riddled with bullet holes. The car’s driver’s seat was stained with blood, while its deflated tyres and shattered windows bore evidence of the violent attack.
The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka has confirmed the killing. In a statement on Saturday, the chancellor, Rev. Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi, described the death as devastating.
“Shocked to the marrow, it is with crushing pain and sorrow, yet a total submission to the will of the Almighty God and a firm hope in the resurrection of the dead, that I inform you of the tragic death of yet another brother of ours, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya,” he said, calling on Catholic faithful and Christians to pray for the repose of the priest’s soul.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Government has vowed to spare no resources, including the use of technology and credible intelligence, to track down the perpetrators and defeat “the remnant agents of evil in the state.”
To this end, it has placed a ₦10 million bounty on anyone with credible information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible. Members of the public are urged to contact 07077451426 with useful information.
Nigeria’s South-east has in recent years witnessed repeated attacks on security operatives, clergy, and civilians, which authorities often attribute to armed groups linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) though the group has consistently denied involvement.
