The Oyo State Judicial Panel on police brutality has given reasons as to why it is yet to commence public hearing on about 70 petitions submitted to it.
Recall that Governor Makinde had inaugurated the Oyo State judicial panel on November 10 and appointed former Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Badejoko Adeniji, to head the panel on cases of police brutality and other rights’ violations, urging the panel to objectively deal with the petitions.
Its Administrative Secretary, Mr Salami Hakeem, while responding to an inquiry from the Nigerian TRIBUNE said the panel has been sitting and would soon update the public on the progress so far
“We have started sitting and our next sitting will be January 11. Very soon, we will go on air to tell the public what we are doing so far. The committee has been meeting.” Hakeem said
Giving reasons why they are yet to call for public hearing, he said individual members of the panel are still analyzing the petitions.
According to him, after the individual assessments, they will invite people for public hearing probably next month
He said, “You know we have to get people to submit their petitions, complaints and we have to collate and analyse and assess those complaints, then we will announce when the public hearing will start.
“Individual members are already looking at the petitions and on the 11th of January, the result of the individual assessment will be submitted and we will now know what to do after that.
“There will be pre-trial; we have to analyse all those reports and see when to invite people to give their testimony.
“We have over 70 petitions that we are looking at. It is very likely that we will have a public hearing next month.”
