The embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, is close to being released from detention after negotiating a plea bargain with the Tinubu administration, a report by SaharaReporters claims.

According to the report, Emefiele’s non-prosecution deal hinges on his agreement to return N50 billion allegedly corruptly acquired.

Citing sources, SaharaReporters reveals that the Minister of Justice has signed the plea bargain awaiting President Tinubu’s approval after his return from a medical trip abroad.

Investigators reportedly traced N72 billion and $70 million linked to Emefiele which he had earmarked for his failed presidential bid. Ownership of Polaris Bank was also allegedly traced to the former CBN governor.

Emefiele was arrested in July over forex fraud and faced 20 charges of financial crimes before an FCT High Court. However, his trial stalled after opting for a plea bargain.

The reported N50 billion agreement could see charges dropped against Emefiele who has been detained by the DSS since his sack as CBN governor in June this year.

Critics argue the alleged plea bargain deal may rob Nigerians of the transparency and justice expected from his trial.

With President Tinubu expected back in the country this weekend, he will have the final say on whether Emefiele walks free or faces prosecution over the corruption allegations.
